The Radnor Arms, Nunton

Last night marked my first visit to The Radnor Arms, Nunton. What a cracking pub let down only by it being a Hall and Woodhouse establishment and therefore not having anything decent to drink beer wise (last night they had Tanglefoot and Badger Best one, neither of which do I care for much). However, we were not there for the beer and instead were visiting en-masse on the recommendation of my sister for the food.

I started with gravlax of salmon with dill mayonnaise, the mayonnaise was obviously homemade and delicious - properly buttery and the gravlax nicely cured. The main event was the Scotch fillet steak that was cooked very well, very tender and nicely beefey. I have not had a decent steak for some time (excepting infrequent visits to Belgium of course) so this was a rare treat .The handmade chips were tasty - perhaps a bit longer in the frier would have been good but that is not to everyone's taste.



We had a big bowl of mixed vegetables and my sister specially requested fried mushrooms which also arrived in a big bowl despite not being listed on the menu. Top marks all round especially as the waitress/bar maid/owner? (who was on her own but still providing an efficient and friendly service) made sure we had fresh cutlery and napkins after the first course - this is often ommited.

The real icing on the cake for me tough came with the pudding where they excelled themselves - apple and blackcurrant crumble which by itself would have been superb, but being the greedy type I asked for icecream, cream and custard despite none of the three being listed on the menu. Within a short space of time it duly arrived complete with fresh cream, homemade (delicious) icecream and best of all freshly made custard which was superb.

The best I could manage after all this food was an espresso which was nice before we settled up and went on. I shall be back - the pub has a relaxed atmosphere, is clean and tidy, not too big or too small, the food is excellent and the small menu and a chef who knows their stuff make it a pleasure to eat there. Prices for the main dishes are around the £15-16.00 mark with the steak being £17.95 so not cheap but worth paying for when it is so nice.
